When two brothers Rodney and Jack Nixon rented an empty shop opposite a bank, they had an excellent plan. They knew that they would have to work hard, but a fortune was waiting for them in
the bank’s safe. First they blinded the shop windows with newspapers to hide their actions. Then they moved in their tools, locked the door and set to work. They had both worked for a
building company, so it was easy for them to break open the shop’s floor. Then they began to dig a hole, which had to be three metres deep, they thought. Soon there was a mountain of
sand in the backroom of the shop. When they reached the three metres’ depth they started digging towards the bank.
Each morning the Nixons arrived at their shop and worked hard in their tunnel the whole day. Like good workers they had lunch at 12.30; like good Englishmen they paused for tea in the
afternoon; like good husbands they stopped work at 5 and went home. No one, not even their families, knew what they were doing. No one knew about their plan to leave the country as soon as
they had the money in their hands.
After two weeks they were nearly there. Now the only thing they had to do was drill a hole with a pneumatic hammer in the bank’s floor and take the money. They planned this last part on
Saturday. The bank was closed then. They thought nothing could go wrong. The day the two brothers climbed out of the tunnel – right into the waiting arms of policemen who were standing
around the hole in the floor. At the police-station they found out what had gone wrong. The owner of the shop had seen the blinded shop windows . He had peeped inside and then he saw the sand
and the tools, he told the police that something strange was going on in the shop he had rented to Nixon and Nixon….
